2019-04-10 · WASHINGTON, D.C. — A global team of astronomers, led by Harvard scientists, has for the first time captured an image of a black hole. The image, revealed today by researchers from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), shows a bright ring of material surrounding a dark center that marks the event horizon of the black hole — the “point of no return, where nothing, not even light — can

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a large telescope array consisting of a global network of radio telescopes. The EHT project combines data from several very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) stations around Earth, which form a combined array with an angular resolution sufficient to observe objects the size of a supermassive black hole's event horizon. But in the new EHT picture, we can resolve detail close to the point where this jet leaves the black hole. What's more, this base area seems twisted and somewhat offset from the main axis of the jet. The Event Horizon Telescope team has unmasked the heart of the jet-shooting galaxy M87. Astronomers just knocked on a black hole’s door. An international team reports in this week’s Science that it has peered into the very heart of M87, an elliptical galaxy whose supermassive black hole spews forth a 5,000-light-year-long jet of ionized particles flung out by whirling lines of magnetic field. 2021-03-24 · The EHT setup allowed the team to directly observe the black hole shadow and the ring of light around it, with the new polarized-light image clearly showing that the ring is magnetized. The results are published today in two separate papers in The Astrophysical Journal Letters by the EHT collaboration.

The black-hole image that the EHT strong magnetic fields should stir the accretion disk and produce hotter spots that then orbit the black hole. In 2018, a separate team reported

The supermassive black hole has an enormous gravitational pull that can power jets of particles that move at almost the speed of light across large distances. M87’s jets give light spanning the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to visible rays to gamma waves. This pattern is distinctive for each black hole.

In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration delivered the first image of a black hole, revealing M87*–the supermassive object in the center of the M87 galaxy. The EHT team has now used the lessons learned last year to analyze the archival data sets from 2009-2013, some of them not published before.
